Tyranny: a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler.
When we were kids, we all learned stories of true bravery throughout history.
We were always left with the thought of how different our lives would be today if brave men and women had not stood up to the tyrant of their time.
We were also challenged with the question of which we would be if we ever came face-to-face with tyranny - a brave Patriot or a coward?
Two such stories come to mind.
First, the story of brave Patriots who stood up to King George, the tyrant of their time, and fought in the American Revolution. They knew the risks, but that didn't stop them. Freedom was far too precious. Of course there were many others who were too afraid to take on King George. They would rather go along to get along, no matter how much control the King had over their lives. But in the end, it was the brave Patriots we have to thank for our freedom today. If it weren't for them, the cowards of their time would have continued to bow down to the King and we’d still be a British Colony.
Second, is the story of the brave Patriots who fought for Texas independence at the Alamo against the tyrant of their time, Santa Anna. When he knew the Patriots were greatly outnumbered and had no chance of victory, Colonel Travis took out his sword and drew a line in the sand saying, “those prepared to give their lives in freedom’s cause, come over to me.” All the Patriots crossed the line except for one - the one who lived to tell the story. But Texas owes our statehood to those brave Patriots who stayed and fought. If they had surrendered the Alamo, Sam Houston would not have had time to prepare his forces and the war for Texas Independence would most likely have been lost. So again, it was brave Patriots we have to thank for our freedom today. If all had been cowards, our land would still be part of Mexico.
But there were other stories we read in History class that didn’t hit home for us like these two. Many of us complained that we didn’t need to study much about the past – we needed to look to the future. But our teachers would always remind us that “history repeats itself”. They would challenge us to look closer – to see that the names and the faces in the stories changed, but the basic struggle was the same. Tyranny vs Freedom has been a constant battle throughout human history.
The Tyrant of Texas
In 2012, Republicans won every statewide race on the Texas ballot. Republicans outnumber Democrats in both the Texas House and the Texas Senate. That should mean that the state legislative committees are chaired by Republicans, the state budget is balanced by cutting spending, and conservative legislation is guaranteed passage. It should also mean that Texas leads the battle for State’s rights against the tyrants in Washington.
But that is not the case.
Why not? Because Texas has its own Tyrant – Speaker of the Texas House, Joe Straus.
In Texas, the Speaker is chosen every two years by the Representatives in a public vote at the opening of each new legislative session. In 2009, Straus was elected speaker by 64 Democrats and only 11 Republicans.
As Speaker, Straus controls all legislative committee appointments as well as which bills come to the floor for a vote. Straus, being a RINO, already has the support of liberal Democrats and RINOs.
But he has to bully conservative Republican legislators into voting for him. Anyone who chooses to vote for a true conservative and vote against him, is punished with either having all of his/her bills ignored and/or having no decent committee appointments.
On the other hand, anyone who supports Straus is rewarded.
With a quick look at committee chairmanships from last session, you can see that even though Texas voters chose more Republicans than Democrats to serve in the Texas House, Democrats still control major legislative committees because they support Straus - Committees that have the power to forward the Liberal Agenda.

The root of the problem? It is simple. It all goes back to those stories we read in school.
The same battle – Tyranny vs Freedom – is being fought today.
But there is a HUGE difference now.
When the Early Americans came face-to-face with their tyrant, King George, many chose to become brave Patriots and fight for freedom.
When early Texans came face-to-face with tyranny at the Alamo, many again chose to fight for freedom.
But, the people fighting the battle in 2011 - the Texas Republican Representatives - made a different choice when they came face-to-face with their tyrant, Speaker Joe Straus.
They did NOT choose as our forefathers did - to stand against Tyranny. They chose to surrender. They chose the path of cowards. They chose to bow down to the Tyrant of the Texas House.
Their cowardice was so upsetting to Texas Republicans, that the following was added to the Texas Party Platform at the State Republican Convention in 2012:
Texas House Leadership Town Hall – We call for the Republican members of the Texas House of Representatives after the November election, leading up to the Legislative session, to hold public town hall meetings in which the voters can express their wishes and thoughts about the leadership for the 83rd Session.
Texas House Leadership Caucus – We call for the Republican members of the Texas House of Representatives to convene in caucus after each November general election to determine by secret ballot their candidate for Speaker of the House, and that rules be instituted to ensure the integrity and security of the secret ballot so that members may vote without risk of retribution by the prevailing party. We also call for the Republican members of the Texas House to vote as a unified body for their selected speaker candidate when the Legislature convenes in regular session and a vote for speaker is called on the House Floor
The 83rd Texas Legislature
In 2012, Texans fought at the grassroots level to elect a true conservative, Ted Cruz, to represent Texas in the US Senate.
With that win, they hoped to send a message to the Texas GOP establishment that ‘go along to get along’ politicians are not wanted here. Texans want freedom fighters. People who are not afraid to stand up to tyrants – at home, in Washington or abroad.
The message did not sink in to the Representatives of the Texas House. They all talked big during the election - about standing strong on our conservative principles – about standing up to tyranny from Washington – about stopping Agenda 21 in its tracks…………..But, the day the election was over, they went right back to coward mode.
A survey by the Texas Tribune a week after the 2012 election shows how many Republican cowards we elected to the Texas House. If you relate this list to the stories we read in history, you can see how our current ‘Republican leaders’ will be labeled in our history books:
Brave Patriot
(Running Against Straus for Speaker)
Cowards that Surrendered
(Voting for Straus)
Cowards that
(Won’t Tell Us)
Lozano, Jose Manuel
It is no wonder our nation is in so much trouble. It is no wonder that electing Republicans changes nothing.
The real problem is NOT that we don’t elect enough Republicans. – the problem is we don’t elect enough Brave Patriots - enough Freedom Fighter Republicans.
Because if only ONE Representative is brave enough to stand up to the Tyrant of the Texas House -Texas has NO HOPE that more than one will have the backbone to stand against the tyrants in Washington.
So, it is again time for the grassroots to save Texas. The same grassroots that worked to send a brave Patriot to fight for Texas in the US Senate, Ted Cruz.
It is time to make the cowards of the Texas House more afraid of the voters who elected them than of Joe Straus.
It is time to remind them that they WORK FOR US – not for him.
What can the grassroots do?
- Call or fax the office of your GOP State Rep. find contact info here
- Demand to know WHEN a townhall meetings will be held to discuss the House Speaker issue as called for by the GOP state platform.
- When a town hall meeting is scheduled, get the word out. Attend the meeting and INSIST that your Rep vote against Joe Straus for Speaker.
- Get the message out for everyone to call their Rep’s office and send a stream of postcards reminding him/her that you EXPECT a vote against Joe Straus. Send a hand delivered letter to your Rep via Empower Texans here. **Don’t waste time on emails. They have less effect.
- If your Rep does not schedule a townhall , contact your county GOP chairman here. Insist that he/she sponsor a townhall meeting.
- Inform your Rep that if he/she votes for Joe Straus, the same grassroots in your district that worked to elect Ted Cruz, will work to identify and elect a true conservative brave Patriot to replace him/her in the next primary.
- If you have time, make frequent phone calls to reinforce your intent.
- Contact the Texas GOP headquarters here. Let them know that you expect the House GOP to follow the party platform and hold a House Leadership Caucus.
- Learn more about Joe Straus and his conservative opponent for Speaker, Bryan Hughes: stop – emails – FW – myth – voices – watchdog – tea
In our current struggle of Freedom vs Tyranny, Conservative Americans lost a major battle in 2012.
Let’s not let Conservative Texans lose another in the Texas House.
This is our test – the one where our question is answered:
If I ever come face-to-face with tyranny, which will I be –Let’s make sure that the stories our grandchildren read in Texas History are NOT about how brave Patriots gave their lives for our freedom at the Alamo 176 years before cowards in the Texas House sold out the state for short term committee positions in 2012.
a brave Patriot or a coward?
